Schenectady, of all places

Cornering In Schenectady

First cross race of the season, and first race in two months. What a way to start.

Schenectady’s Central Park and CRBC put on one heck of a race, with a great course. Spending five hours round trip for forty-five minutes of riding in circles? Yeah, it better be a good course. Actually, I was thinking that maybe, just maybe, I’d jump in the A race as well as the Masters 35+, but with my family at home and having spend lots of hours working lately I’d rather spend some time with the kids.

There appeared to be a good turnout, but the 23 starters were almost evenly divided between 35s, 45s, and 55s. I recognized some guys from last year and other road races.

Chuck Quackenbush was there, and I was on his wheel when he mistimed a bunny-hop and reminded me why I don’t bunny hop. Nobody moved the large downed tree from last year, either, so more familiar territory jumping over that one.

I had a good start, but the two seconds here and there from cornering slower, etc., eventually found me finishing fourth. I had third until the penultimate lap when I lost enough steam for my shadow to come around me and stay away.
